The Town of Strasburg was founded in 1761 and is famous for pottery, antiques, civil war history and beautiful views of the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding Mountains.  It is is tucked in the valley of the Shenandoah River with vistas of Massanutten Mountain and the Allegheny foothills.

The pottery industry started around 1761 and continued until 1908 with some dozen and a half firms producing commercial earthen and stoneware. The tradition is alive today at the Strasburg Museum the craft of the potter's wheel and kiln are being taught.

Originally built as a pottery factory around 1891, the Strasburg Museum  later became the depot for the B & O and Southern Railroads. Today the museum displays: the best of original potter's products; Civil War collections; early farming implements; railroad history; Indian artifacts; and glimpses of day to day life in the town and the Valley.

In 1862 Strasburg was an important center during the Valley Campaign of the  Civil War.  Stonewall Jackson made history when he captured enemy locomotives in Martinsburg, West Virginia and pulled them across roads with horses to get them to the rails in Strasburg where they joined Confederate cause.  In 1864 Strasburg was again at the heart of fighting in the Valley.  Cedar Creek and Fisher's Hill Battlefields are both close by and accessible to the public.
